Poem: Who am I?

“What’s that voice inside my head?
Who am I?
Who is “I”?
Who’s the one who asks?
Who’s the one who answers?
Am I the I or the am?
Is all that exist the I am only?
What’s not me?
Who is me?
Is it me, the “I”, or just me?
I only know I’m me. “

The Princess and her tower

Written by Itzin Devaki.

A long time ago, a princess was trapped in a tall tower in an abandoned castle. She waited for long for a gentile prince to come to her rescue.

She waited for thousands of years, knowing someone would remember her and come back for her until she naturally aged in her mind.

During her downtime in the tower, she observed the dragon was usually away when she was awake. She memorized the multiple paths to escape from the devoured claws of the Dragon.  She had multiple books, the only company to her thoughts, left in the tower before she could remember. She thought there would be more people in the castle, for her meals were always prepared and left at the door. She has tried to escape before around the time she would receive the meals, but nobody or her meals would come while she was expecting.

She started her plan to escape multiple times, but her fears of losing her life for the unknown kept her waiting.

One day, when the pain of her enclosure and her aim to see the world she dreamt of was bigger than her fear, she took strength, followed her escape plan, and took enough clothing and mud to cover her princess’s beauty.  It was easier than she thought when neither the dragon nor any captors appeared to stop her. She wondered why she never tried to escape before.

Having left the castle and gone through the surrounding virgin forest, she saw a group of men.

The men argued about who and how they would kill the Dragon, and who would keep the princess for himself. They needed more than one man for the task, but only one could marry the princess and become the King of that state. The ground already had the dead bodies of brave men willing to fight for her love.

Her petite composure and disguise helped her walk across the groups of men without setting their egos to fight.

She heard how the stories of her beauty survived throughout the years and what the men thought of her docile nature because they freed her.  She tried to control her fury at the descriptions of how they would kill the Dragon and make it into pieces to sell in the market, looking to become wealthy and a legend in their communities.

She heard how many desires they had for her body and her home. It was a search for power, and she lamented her wait for so long. No man wanted her for herself, but they wanted the power over the Dragon, the castle, and her life as a servant to her savior. Killing the Dragon was their only plan; killing each other for the right to do that was part of their plan. She would not be free because she would only transfer captors.

She finished walking across the groups of men, looking that more were coming from far away, walking out of the sun setting down.

Knowing what would happen if these men discovered who she was, she returned to the virgin forest.

After the Sun completed its ritual of darkness, the moon helped her transform again into the Dragon and fly away to the places she always dreamt of going. She knew she could always go back to her tower and her castle, now without waiting; only turning herself into the princess when Dragon hunters were not around.
